Possess Your Soul
Recently, I’ve had several opportunities for patience. There are days where I’m overwhelmed and it’s in those times where it would be easy to lash out or do something foolish, that I must exercise patience.
Luke 21:19 NKJV
By your patience possess your souls.
Patience is the Greek word “hupomoné” meaning endurance, patience, perseverance, or steadfastness. Luke reminds us that patience is directly linked to salvation. Thus, patience (endurance) must be a very important trait to possess that will ultimately keep us on the narrow path. Scripture tells us:
James 1:3-4 NKJV
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
1 Peter 1:6-7 NKJV
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ
In a world where most people cannot endure, that is what separates saints from the world. Patience, long suffering, endurance are a major part of sanctification. It’s in the struggle and pressing that our faith is built and we learn to only cling to the things that draw us closer to God.
So, the next time you find yourself on the brink of giving up or crashing out, remember to possess your soul and exercise patience.
