The Word & Furniture
2 Timothy 3:17 (KJV) says “That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
The word furnished introduces an interesting concept about Scripture and the role it should play in our lives. Let’s look at the preceding verses:
V. 15-16 (KJV) “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
When you think of something being furnished, you think of a home or apartment or dwelling place , decked out with a couch, table, bed - things that are needed to elevate a home. That word furnished is the Greek word exartizó which means to be fully equipped, to complete, to furnish thoroughly. Having recently moved to a new space, I realized how much furniture is required and the right kinds of furniture together can make something look brand new, add character, and identify your personality and who you are.
Upon thinking about it, I realized how much Scripture is supposed to do the same in our lives.
1 Peter 2:2 (KJV) “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”
Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Proverbs 23:7 (KJV) “For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.”

Just like when you furnish a home, The Word allows us to become elevated, functional, and shows you who you really are. It is important to stay connected to the Word of God and accept it, as without it we are like an unfurnished home; full of potential but not functional.
James 1:21 “Therefore get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.”
