Getting Through the Mundane
Sometimes, the task at hand is not fun work. Sometimes it’s work that is thankless or seems never ending. Work is not always rewarding, unfortunately.
But, the Bible gives us comfort in Colossians and Galatians that when we do things, even the most meaningless task as if it were for the Lord and not for men, and we don’t grow weary and doing the right thing, that’s when we are blessed.
Colossians 3:23-24 NKJV
23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Galatians 6:9 NKJV
9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
I do not know about you, but that is comforting. The Lord knew we would be in situations in which the work required of us would be less than glamorous. And yet, we have scripture to encourage us to do it anyway and cheerfully because we will be blessed by God.
On the same note though, we have to remember that there is balance in life. The Bible tells us that it will at some point the rain will rain, and the sun will shine on everyone. In other words, it’s just built-in that no matter who you are, some days will be great and some will be not so great, but in both, we learn to praise God:
Matthew 5:45 NKJV
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
So, we have to be mindful of that and we also have to remember that the mundane season doesn’t always last, and if you can be trusted with very little, the stuff nobody wants to do, then you can and will, eventually be trusted with much:
Luke 16:10 AMP
10 “He who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little thing is also dishonest in much.
Notice how that scripture ends with if you can’t be trusted or you are dishonest in little, you basically can’t move on to better. I had a teacher in high school who used to say struggle builds character, and boy I used to hate when he would say that because that meant we were about to fail his calculus exam. But as I grew older, I saw the wisdom in what he was saying and that it’s actually biblical:
Romans 5:3-5
3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
We can apply that to our own struggles. If we let it, it will build us! And so, I leave you with this scripture as an encouragement for the next time you feel overwhelmed or stuck in monotony:
Phillippians 4:12-13 AMP
12 I know how to get along and live humbly [in difficult times], and I also know how to enjoy abundance and live in prosperity. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret [of facing life], whether well-fed or going hungry, whether having an abundance or being in need. 13 I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]
Go in peace and comfort!
